Josy Ajiboye

Josy Ajiboye (artist and cartoonist) worked with the Daily Times newspaper as a cartoonist from 1971 to 2000. His cartoons provided satirical commentary on social issues in Nigeria during the period of the oil boom in his very popular cartoon strip “Josy Ajiboye on Sunday”.

Drawing imagery from popular stories, he documented crime, and the failure of the Nigerian government to provide basic amenities like electric power, roads and water for its citizens despite the growing wealth from oil. The subject-curator for the John Randle Centre visited Ajiboye in August 2020 and discovered his archive of cartoons, including original drawings for his Sunday Times cartoon strip – a treasure trove.
